((kirsten joyce)) >> plus...it's day two of the special session in carson city. as lawmakers fight to get the raiders in las vegas. we'll see who showed up during yesterday's meetings and what else was on the agenda. ((brian loftus)) >> and...we'll see why the city of oakland has to say about the raiders possibly moving to las vegas. ((kirsten joyce)) 8 news now good day, the valley's news leader, starts right now./// ((now, live... ((kirsten joyce)) thank's for waking up with us i'm kirsten joyce. ((brian loftus)) >> and i'm brian loftus today is day number two for the special session in carson city. lawmakers are deciding to approve 750- million- dollars in public funding for an n-f-l stadium ((kirsten joyce)) >> but the assembly has also been busy... with the latest installment of the more cops tax. sheriff joe lombardo testified
that he does not have the ability to provide enough officers to the strip with current staffing levels. the sales tax increase would give him the funding for 66 more officers for the strip and downtown... and another 245 officers in the valley. most of those would be metro officers. ((joe lombardo/clark county sheriff: "it's as a result of what took place at the infrastructure committee, it's addressing tourism as a whole, and as a question, and the more we delay, the more issues we have.")) ((kirsten joyce)) he's also wanting more officers because of a 14 percent increase in violent crime over last year. if approved... the increase would generate an additional 31 million dollars for clark county police agencies. ((brian loftus)) meanwhile the talk of the special session is the 750- million- dollars in public funding for an n-f-l stadium. yesterday lawmakers focused on unlv and with the rebels be protected should the stadium be built. unlv would share the stadium with the raiders a reasonable rent approximately 250,000 per
he's comfortable with all the wording in the proposal. (( len jessup unlv president it's difficult to say what rent will be because of the facility is not built yet we don't even know the costs of the facility. that'll be determined down the road that's why we felt good with the language as a marke. ((brian loftus)) >> casino builder steve wynn and mgm ceo jim murren both spoke at the special session to help convince lawmakers the stadium is beneficial. wynn says the deal is a no brainer e expected to show up later in the week.//// ((kirsten joyce)) back in oakland....raiders fans and the city's mayors are not fans of the potential move to las vegas. phil matier shows us how people from oakland has to say about the stadium proposal. (oakland mayor libby schaaf) i do not think that is it responsible to offer $750 million in public funds. and oakland mayor libby
into a bidding war with las vegas. schaaf - it is not appropriate for oakland or alameda county to come up with $750 million in public funds - we are not repeating mistakes of the past (matier vo) the mistake was the last $180 million raider stadium deal that went bust and wound up costing oakland and alameda tax payers $20- million =a year. oakland remembers a similar promise that was made to us in the past that dido i hope that nevada lawmakers look at that cautionary tale. paying off the raider deal meant millions less for public safety-roads- and other city services. but if they if they won't match the vegas money- what can they do? we are offering to finance the infrastructure that could be upwards of 200 million dollars. (councilman larry reid 12:19) but no public money going into the actual building of the stadium. the mayor has made that absolutely clear. (councilman noel gallo/ 13:50) i
with is headed by former raider and 49er ronnie lott. (councilman reid/13:09) if you are getting money from the federal government (cut to)if you are going to the state for grants. (cut to) matier - but not something that oakland taxpayers would have to pay reid - right (mos - #3 cyhthia ganote /8:44) i do think that local sports are important to the economy (mos - #1 linda gordan/(7:22) what about the owners? (mos #2 richard hodge /7:55) this is professional sports there is no loyalty to the community no loyalty to the fans sherry how's the weather today?
